Virtual Summer Camp Policies & FAQs

Our technology and arts-based summer camps excite young minds and prepare them for a future of creative and collaborative work and play. Staff are committed to helping each camper reach their potential, and most importantly, have fun.

  • Due to COVID-19 restrictions, summer camps will be online
  • Camps run sessions on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Required materials or equipment will be available for pick up the Saturday before camp starts (with the exception of July 4th)
  • Equipment pickups and drop offs will be contactless and persons must wear a mask

Our policies ensure that our programs run effectively for the benefits of our campers and their families. We appreciate you taking the time to get acquainted with them. As always, reach out to us with any questions: communityfablab@gmail.com.

BORROWING EQUIPMENT

Select camps require families to borrow Fab Lab equipment such as drawing tablets, laptops, and Micro:Bits. A monetary deposit is required at camp registration to borrow the equipment. Fab Lab will refund the deposit upon receipt and assessment of the borrowed equipment as long as the equipment is returned within three days of its scheduled return date. Families forfeit their deposits if the equipment is lost, stolen, damaged, or returned more than three days past its scheduled return date.

CARING FOR EQUIPMENT

We expect campers to care for borrowed equipment to the best of their abilities. We recommend that campers wash their hands before using the equipment, avoid eating around the equipment, and store the equipment in a safe space where it will not be stepped on.

CONTACTLESS MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT PICKUP

Most camps require families to pick up materials and/or equipment ahead of the camp start date. On all occasions except July 4th weekend, the pick ups will occur the Saturday before the camp start date from 1-5pm. If this pickup time does not work for you, please let us know in advance.

Pickups will occur outside the Fab Lab facility, weather permitting. Materials and equipment will be spread out on tables and labeled with the campers’ names. Equipment like laptops, Micro:Bits, and drawing tablets will have an accompanying equipment rental agreement requiring an adult signature. All persons picking up materials or equipment must wear a mask for the safety of Fab Lab staff and other families.

CONTACTLESS EQUIPMENT DROP OFF

Borrowed equipment needs to be returned from 1-5pm the Saturday after the camp concludes. Drop offs will occur outside the Fab Lab facility, weather permitting. Families will return the equipment into the appropriate bins. Staff will be there to confirm receipt of the equipment. Once equipment is assessed for damage and found in proper condition, the deposit refund process will begin. All persons dropping off equipment must wear a mask for the safety of Fab Lab staff and other families.

CONTACTLESS PROJECT PICKUPS

Some camps, like Fab Lab 101, will require the Fab Lab to print or laser cut campers’ projects upon conclusion of the camp. Campers’ fabricated projects will be available for pickup from 3-6pm on the Thursday after the camp concludes. If this pickup time does not work for you, please let us know in advance.

Pickups will occur outside, weather permitting. Campers projects will be spread out on a table and labeled with the campers names. All persons picking up projects must wear a mask for the safety of Fab Lab staff and other families.

REFUND POLICY

Cancellation up to 30 days before start date – Full refund minus a $10 service fee
Cancellation up to 7 days before start date – 50% refund
Cancellation after 7 days before start date – No refund

If you would like to cancel or get a refund contact communityfablab@gmail.com.

VIRTUAL ARRIVAL

Campers need to arrive on time to their camp’s Zoom meeting space. We recommend signing in at least 5 minutes early to make sure that campers’ internet connection, camera and microphone are all working properly for the day. Fab Lab will have tech support to help campers through any technological difficulties.

OTHER AWESOME INFORMATION

How many campers are in each camp? How many instructors will they have?

Each camp allows 12-15 campers. There will always be 2 instructors per camp and select camps will also have an intern for extra support.

What if I’m running late?

It’s OK, life happens. Please email the Fab Lab to let instructors know. We’d also like to know if you have to leave early for any appointments.

Is my child ready for a Fab Lab Camp?

Most of our camps and workshops require some computer skills. If you would like to make sure your child is ready, check out our guidelines.

If you would like to sign up your child for a camp, but he or she isn’t old enough yet,  an exception might be possible. This is at the instructor’s discretion and your child may be required to come to the lab to demonstrate proficiency.

I have a child who would be really interested in a Fab Lab camp, but I can’t afford it. Are there scholarships available?

Need-based scholarships are available. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

How will I know I successfully registered my child for camp?

After you register, you will receive an automated confirmation email. If you do not receive an email, please contact us to make sure we know you are coming.

Who are the camp leaders?

Each week an email will go out to families registered and Camp leads will be listed. And you can also reach out to the Fab Lab at communityfablab@gmail.com if you have more questions

Will my kid(s) get a screen break?

Camps will have a 10-15 min snack/recess break during each session.

I’m not familiar with some of the tools and programs you are using. Could you tell me about them?

Check out the tutorial gateway to learn about our tools and projects. If you have additional questions about specific camps, please feel free to email us with questions.
