Welcome to Fab Lab’s 2019 Summer Camps! Please browse below by clicking on the images to see full descriptions and details for our selection of camps for Summer 2019. Step 1: Browse Camps

Morning camps go from 9am until 12pm. Afternoon camps go from 1pm until 4pm. If participants register for both a morning and afternoon camp they may bring a lunch and stay at the lab between sessions.

Trap Jaw Ant Camp | 8/5 – 8/9


Trap Jaw Ant Camp

Have you ever wondered how tiny animals perform extraordinary feats? Come and learn how trap-jaw ants use their jaws to snap faster than a speeding bullet and leap over ten-times their body size! Campers will learn ant biology and the physics that allows these uncanny abilities using high speed videography and microscopy.

Take Home Creations: Trap Jaw models constructed with wood and acrylic and a newfound appreciation for small and mighty creatures!

Fab Lab 101 | 6/3 – 6/7


Fab Lab 101

What is a Fab Lab Camp? If you’d like to learn, start here! In this introductory camp we explore our most popular lab tools and work together to make vinyl stickers, cut with a laser, and print in 3D. Campers get exposed to different methods of digital design, critical thinking, and learn the benefits of prototyping.

Take Home Creations: Various creations worked on over the week including a laser name tag and stickers.

Comics & Zines | 6/3 – 6/7


Comics & Zines

Love drawing characters? Designing storylines or developing your next manifesto? Then we are ready for comics and zines camp! Campers will explore the process of creating characters and comics, from initial idea to completed page. Have fun with penciling, inking and coloring your own comic page. This camp with utilize hand skills and incorport lab tools to develop comic and zine covers. You must share a love of drawing to really enjoy this camp.

Minecraft 3D | 6/3 – 6/7


Minecraft 3D

Learn to use this incredibly popular game as a design tool to bring your 3D creations to life! Campers learn how to scan, render, and print using Minecraft, and learn about cool plug-ins to make building and easier ways to protect creations. Campers create and take home their own 3D print while collectively working on a more detailed 3D design. Campers can also take any copies of worlds they make while at the lab and will have access to our creative mode server.

Take Home Creations: A Minecraft 3D print and digital files, if they are requested.

Prerequisites: Basic computing experience, and familiarity with WASD controls on a computer.

Plushie Maker | 6/10 – 6/14


Plushie Maker

Ever wanted to design and sew your plushie? Our plushie makers camps explore the cute, cuddly, and sometimes creepy world of plushies. This camp will focused on developing, sewing, and construction skills. You are sure to walk away with a unique creation and increased sewing skills!

Engineering & Design Exploration | 6/10 – 6/14


Engineering & Design Exploration

Can you built the strongest most visually vibrant birdhouse? How about a long range catapult? In this camp, go from a novice to a master builder as you learn everything from simple structures up to responsive architecture! Campers will design, build, and decorate a new structure each day while learning about the built the world around us!

Take Home Creations: Completed creations from the week like a bird house and catapult!

Prerequisites: Interest in learning new things, experience with tools a plus

Escape Room Maker | 6/10 – 6/14


Escape Room Maker

Be the gamemaster in this camp for code breakers, storytellers, and puzzle-solvers. Campers will spend one week working together to create an immersive escape room. Will you get out?

Take Home Creations: Custom code-cracking devices and tips and tricks for puzzle design

Prerequisites: Interest in team work, patience, and previous escape room experience a plus

Art with RPG Maker | 6/17-6/21


Art With RPG Maker

Been through 1.0 but the default art style got you down? Ever wanted to add things to your game but can’t find the right art? Come join us in Art With RPG Maker! We’ll be learning to use a variety of tools to edit and create our very own art assets to stick into our games. Campers will collaborate on a single game and develop the art and story together.

Textile Adventures | 6/17 – 6/21


Textile Adventures

Campers will learn the basics of surface design through screen printing, batik, block printing, any dyeing. Projects will include screen printed t-shirts, Batik flags, and more!

RPG Maker 1.0 | 6/17 – 6/21 & 7/8 – 7/12


RPG Maker 1.0

Have you ever wanted to design your own version of D&D? Do you like playing video games? Combine them both in RPG Maker 1.0. Join us in learning some fundamentals behind game design, map making, and generating characters. Throughout the week create and improve a RPG video game of your own design and take it home with you.

Make It Glow – NeoPixels | 7/8 – 7/12


Make It Glow – NeoPixels

Curious about NeoPixels? How to make them work and blink when you want? Then join us for a week using and developing programming skills to create, construct and code their own Neo-Pixel projects using Arduino programming language. Projects will include neopixel signs, infinity boxes, and shoes that light up with each step! In addition to programming Arduino Unos and other small microcontrollers, campers will learn how to read/write an electrical schematic and solder electrical components to build these projects. Please note campers must feel comfortable learning how to solder and will be held to strict safety standards.

Prerequisites: Must be comfortable with a soldering iron, energy to learn, and experience with Arduino a plus

Papercraft Hax | 7/8 – 7/12


Papercraft Hax

Become a paper and sticker engineer! Learn how to create 2D and 3D paper crafts using traditional methods like origami and new methods like laser cutting and engraving. Working with various types of paper, campers will learn about digital design, problem solving, and prototyping.

Digital Jewelry | 7/8 – 7/12


Digital Jewelry

Do you have what it takes to be the next great jewelry designer? Do you want to make your own accessories, but not quite sure where to start? Come join us for this week-long camp on designing and creating your own custom jewelry. Participants will use laser engravers, 3D printers, digital design tools, as well as traditional jewelry-making techniques in order to bring their visions to life.

Steampunk Automata | 7/15 – 7/19


Steampunk Automata

Steampunk embodies a time, place, and aesthetic. Steampunk is a reality that ‘might have been’, a steam-powered world set in the late 19th century. It’s an aesthetic that is heavily versed in a climate of invention and innovation. In this camp, we will build mechanical contraptions called automata, or mechanical sculptures, in the steampunk aesthetic. You will learn how to use levers, shafts, cams, linkages, and motors to design sculptures that tell a story!

Cosplay Creations Fabric Fighters | 7/15 – 7/19


Cosplay Creations Fabric Fighters

Have you ever wanted to be your favorite character? Do you want to have the coolest costume around? Come to Fabric Fighters where you’ll learn a variety of sewing techniques and other tools to design and make your own cosplays.

RPG Maker 2.0 | 7/22 – 7/26


RPG Maker 2.0

Been through 1.0 and looking for more? Do you have a simple game already but want to flesh out your fights or make cooler cutscenes. Come join us in 2.0 for some more in-depth game creation. We’ll be learning some techniques for quicker game design and focusing more on advanced dungeon creation and characters. We’ll even learn about ways to alter your gameplay!

Have you ever wondered what’s inside your earbuds? In this camp you will learn how to build all the elements in a sound system, from the speakers to the amplifier, while learning electronics along the way. We’ll also explore the basics behind sound processing, from how we digitize music to how we create synths.

Wee Makers

Can’t wait to go to a Fab Lab camp? This camp is for our littlest makers and involves hands-on creation using materials like paper and cardboard. Campers learn teamwork, spatial reasoning, and problem solving by working together to make big things.

Board Game Design

Have you ever wanted to build your own version of Clue or Guess Who? Do you think you could improve Sorry! Or Life? Join us in a foray into board game design featuring advanced manufacturing tools such as laser cutters and 3D printers. Throughout the week, campers will learn the fundamentals of game design while working in teams to create their own unique board games.

Digital Illustration | 7/29 – 8/3


Digital Illustration

Ever wanted to take those pencil drawings or watercolors to the big screen? Then join us for a week of Digital Illustration and develop those skills and portfolio! Campers will learn to use professional tools like drawing tablets and Adobe Photoshop to build off existing ideas and create their own masterpieces.

Cypherpunk | 7/29 – 8/3



Cryptography, the practice of secret communication, has been crucial to societies around the world for thousands of years. Computers have revolutionized how we secretly communicate, enabling use to use online banking, credit cards, talk remotely, and more. Encode and decode both ancient and modern cyphers, while learning how to laser cut, build circuits, and program an Arduino microcontroller.

Creatures & Caverns

Use our tools to customize your tabletop roleplaying experience! Campers will design game aids like dice towers, 3D printed and painted miniatures, custom maps, and will make other assets to enhance their gaming experience. Participants can also share tips on gaming resources like apps for adding atmospheric effects and keeping track of game stats.
