OPEN HOURS APPOINTMENTS

Open hours are back! Community and University members are welcome to visit the lab during our open hours. We highly encourage scheduling an appointment in advance, but appointments can be made at the door so long as there are seats available for the tool(s) you’re looking to use.

Please read “what to know before making an appointment” below for further information.

UIUC CLASSES AT THE FAB LAB

If you are entering the building during scheduled class hours, you will need to show that you have building clearance via the Safer Illinois App or iCard Boarding Pass to our WSA upon entry.

Appointments are not required for scheduled class hours, but are required for any time spent in the lab that overlaps with open hours.

At this time, all visitors to the lab are REQUIRED to wear a mask while in the building REGARDLESS OF VACCINATION STATUS.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE MAKING AN APPOINTMENT
  • Appointments have pre-set time slots to select from for each tool and associated costs listed.
    • Payment for time associated tools (such as the lasers or e-cutters) is a flat cost per appointment slot regardless of time spent with the tool in use.
      • We encourage you to wait to book your laser appointments until your cut/etch file is fully finished and approved by lab staff.
    • If you need additional time for your project, you may sign up for additional consecutive slots if they are available.
    • Please be aware that some tools are slower than others. If you are running a larger file, we encourage you to plan your time accordingly when making your appointment.
    • Laser files with large amounts of etching may need more than one appointment slot to complete.
  • Fab Lab Staff reserve the right to end your in progress file if it exceeds your designated appointment time for that tool.

Additional Information About Lab Tools

Come use the Fab Lab computer lab to get your project started! We have all of the design and control software we use in the lab on these computers so you can start your project here no matter what tool in the lab you want to create the final product on. We have an emphasis on free and open source software solutions, but have a variety of professional design software as well.

Our Universal Laser has a bed size of 18 inches by 32 inches and can cut up to 1/4″ acrylic and plywood. We have some of the more commonly used materials available for sale in the Lab. You are also welcome to bring your own materials, just make sure to have it checked by a staff member to make sure it is safe to use in our lasers. We encourage you to set up a Computer Lab appointment before your laser appointment, so we can look over your files. Due to the popularity of these machines, their use time is limited to the time slot(s) you select.

Our Epilog Laser Cutter has a bed size of 12 inches by 24 inches. It can cut through acrylic and plywood up to 1/4″ thick. Make sure you have your file ready to go so you can make the most out of your reserved time. If you need to prep your file you can always reserve time in our computer lab first! Our staff can help make sure your file is set up to run on the machine, but we cannot make the parts for you! We encourage you to set up a Computer Lab appointment before your laser appointment, so we can look over your files. Due to the popularity of these machines, their use time is limited to the time slot(s) you select.

Come use our digital embroidery machines (and software) to design and stitch your own custom patch! We also have sewing machines, hand tools, and a serger so you can bring your project from concept to completion!

Our large format poster printer is an HP Inkjet printer that can do prints up to 24 inches wide. Print cost is based on the number of prints (if printed on individual sheets) or by linear feet (if printed from the roll). *Student rates available.

Use our Silhouette cutters to create custom stickers, iron on patches, paper cards, and more! This reservation includes use of the machine, and a computer with all the needed software to run it! We have many colors of sticker vinyl, heat transfer vinyl, card-stock, and more available for sale in the Lab. You are also welcome to bring your own materials, just check with a staff member to make sure it is safe to use on these machines.

Print cool stuff using our Flashforge 3d printers! The have a print volume of 5x5x5 inches. If you need to use the lab computers to set up and slice your file please make an appointment in the computer lab first. You will be charged based on the weight of your print. Estimates can be made from the slicing software available in the Lab.

Come use the Fab Labs resin based 3d Printers. These machines use controlled UV light to cure photosensitive resin which builds up to create your object. These printers can produce great detail even on small objects, but they are slow and messy to work with! They have a build volume of 115mm x 65mm x 155mm, and can hold up to 70ml of resin in the vat. Make sure you have a file prepared, or if you need time to prepare a file you can book time in our computer lab first! The cost to use these machines is based on the amount of resin used. We charge 5 dollars for any print using 40 ml or less, and an additional 5 cents per ml for anything over 40 ml.

Need to finish assembly on your project? Tighten the screws on your coffee maker? Put a coat of paint on your 3d print? You can do all of these things and more with a reservation of our Hand Tools area. We have an assortment of screw drivers, pliers, hammers, mallets, chisels, utility knives, and more.

Our West classroom provides a workspace large enough for up to 8 people while socially distanced. We have a projector, and instructor computer set up in the space. You can also call to see if other equipment can be reserved for use by your group in this room. Whether you need to collaborate with peers on a project, or make some progress on your DnD campaign, we are here for you!
