Since mid-March, the CU Community Fab Lab’s staff and lab space have been dedicated to the fabrication of PPE for area medical facilities and essential businesses. Collaborating with 28 University of Illinois and community partners, Fab Lab staff are working to fabricate 2,000 face shield frames and 10,000 disposable shields.
Sew PPE as part of University COVID-19 Response
Fab Lab and UNCC have partnered for 7 years to offer students access to fabrication technology and educational resources out of UNCC’s building in East Urbana. When students could no longer leave their homes in March, 10 teens from the UNCC community decided to sew PPE masks for community members and businesses in need. Fab Lab outreach team members Emilie Butt, Sara Hoag, and Wayne Hardy led the “prep crew” and “sewing crew” virtually through the fabrication process–measuring and cutting materials, and sewing together the final product. Fab Lab’s IT and Community Programs Coordinator Jared Dunn worked with UNCC to loan laptops to families so students could participate.
